Frequently Asked Questions

What each old wives' tale is worth, and when you can actually find out.
Is a gender predictor quiz accurate?
No. Half of all guesses are right by chance, which is the whole reason these tales have survived. Three of the most testable — heart rate, the Chinese calendar and the Drano test — were examined together in a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and none predicted better than chance.
Does a heart rate below 140 mean a boy?
No. A review of 655 fetuses found no meaningful difference in first-trimester heart rate between boys and girls, and a 2023 systematic review concluded heart rate is not a reliable predictor of sex.
Does carrying low mean a boy?
No. Where a bump sits is determined by abdominal muscle tone, the shape and position of the uterus, how the baby is lying, and how many pregnancies came before — none of which depends on the baby's sex.
Is there any old wives' tale that works?
One has a kernel of truth. Morning sickness severe enough to need hospital treatment is associated with carrying a girl, with a reported odds ratio of about 1.6. That is a real association across a population and far too weak to tell you anything about your own pregnancy.
Why does the ring test seem to work?
Because a hand held still makes tiny involuntary movements that amplify whatever the holder expects to see. It is the same effect that moves a ouija board planchette, and it is why the test tends to confirm whatever you were already hoping for.
When can I actually find out the sex?
A non-invasive prenatal test reads placental DNA from a blood sample and can be done from about nine or ten weeks. The anatomy scan at eighteen to twenty-two weeks shows it directly.
