Child Height Predictor

Enter both parents' heights and get the estimate paediatricians actually use — with the range around it, which is the part that matters.
STEP 1

Predict Your Child's Adult Height

This uses the mid-parental method from paediatric growth assessment: average the two parents after adjusting 13 cm for the child's sex. It gives a range about 20 cm wide, because that is how precise the method honestly is — around 95% of children land inside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What the mid-parental method can and cannot tell you, and what else shapes how tall a child grows.
How accurate is a child height predictor?
It gives a range rather than a number, and the range is wide. The American Academy of Pediatrics puts about 95% of children within roughly 4 inches either side of the mid-parental figure — a span of about 20 cm. Anyone quoting a single confident number is overselling the method.
What is the mid-parental height formula?
For a boy, add about 13 cm (5 inches) to the mother's height and average that with the father's. For a girl, subtract 13 cm from the father's height and average that with the mother's. The 13 cm is roughly the average adult height difference between women and men.
Can you predict height from a child's current height?
Better than from the parents alone, but that needs a growth chart rather than a formula. A paediatrician plotting a child's height over time against standard percentiles, and taking bone age into account where relevant, will tell you far more than any calculator.
What else affects how tall a child grows?
Nutrition, general health through childhood, and the timing of puberty all move the outcome, and none of them is in the formula. It also assumes both parents reached their own genetic potential, which is not always true of earlier generations.
Does the father determine height more than the mother?
No. Height is polygenic, with hundreds of variants contributing, and a child inherits them from both parents roughly equally. The 13 cm adjustment in the formula is not about whose genes matter more — it corrects for the average difference between adult men and women.
Is this tool free?
Yes, and it runs entirely on the published formula — there is no sign-up, and nothing you enter is stored.
